WHY YOU SHOULD CHOOSE A STERK SAFE

What Size of Safe Do I Need?

Determining the right size of safe is an important consideration before you buy. To start, take an inventory of the quantity, size and the value of each item you wish to protect. Add it all up and you’ll have a pretty good idea of the size of safe and level of security needed. The total cost of those valuables most likely will far out-weigh the cost of even the most expensive full-sized home/office safes on the market today.

A central location to collect valuables is another benefit to owning a safe at home/office. Cash, plane tickets, deeds, certificates, photo albums, journals are stored in safes to help keep track of valuables and provide personal privacy.

Many previous buyers have found they bought “too small” the first time around and ended up in need of a larger model to accommodate growing collections, either from their own or from other family members. But the solution has been quite simple—buy a second his or her model!

The size and color of the safe may depend upon where you want it installed. Installation locations range from family rooms to bedrooms and from garages to closets. The beauty of these safes are painted in a variety of high gloss colors with classy detailing to match any décor.

Outside the home/office setting, many businesses are turning to security safes to meet their security needs. Whether in an uptown office or in a private business setting at home/office, the safe’s ability to improve security during and after work hours helps relieve management stress over potential theft, including internal theft.

Whether for a business setting or home/office, manufacturers offer adjustable interiors to fit a wide variety of items.
With the limitless possibilities to store valuables, it is nice to know manufacturers offer home/office safes in a variety of sizes, styles, colors, flexible interiors and accessories to meet any specific need.

The number of retailers carrying residential security or gun safes is expanding rapidly because of the growing demand. You can find a variety of models and brands at safe outlets, sporting goods stores, locksmiths and mass merchant retailers across the country. The market is even growing internationally.

Once you get your new safe installed, your comfort level of protection will increase knowing you've made an investment in protecting your future. Buying a safe means now you'll have 24-hour in-home/office convenience and easy access to your valuables and no monthly expenses. Having important valuables close at hand compliments privacy to ensure security of precious keepsakes you prefer others not know about. Just think, no more security checks, keys to keep track of or restricted banking hours. With a safe, you can get what you want, when you need it.

There are a lot of uncertainties in our world today, but one thing is for sure. Owning your own safe can buy you more time and help you to relax when you need it most—whether at home, at work, or on vacation.

Now that’s peace of mind.

Is it a Safe or a Storage Cabinet?

As you begin to shop around, you will notice a wide range of products available, especially when viewing catalogs. Many retailers begin by offering storage cabinets with a key lock for safes. Don’t be trapped into thinking a cabinet is all you need just to keep your valuables away from the kids. While cabinets can keep an inquisitive youngster at bay, it would only take several minutes for a thief to claim your possessions. Plus, if you desire fire protection, nearly all cabinets do not include fire protection.

To differenciate a safe from a storage cabinet the only thing you have to look is the key. It should be more than 9 cm long.
Storage cupboards are ideal for securing documents, contracts and cheques in the office. They are also ideal for protecting drugs in drugstores and drug manufactures or hazardous materials, toxic chemicals and precision instruments in industries and laboratories.

Electronic Lock or Combination Lock?

Electronic locks with multiple user codes and monitoring capabilities are available when there are more employees or family members who need access to the safe. However, combination locks and key locks are more common in residential safes because they are more economical.

Why Do People Think Safes are Expensive Items?

You’d think safes were expensive when you look at the beautiful paint job and detailing. To the contrary, residential security or gun safes are quite affordable. Prices range from $100 for the smaller home/office sized models up to $5,000 for the highest fire rated, heaviest and high securitymodels.

Fire Proof or Fire Resistant?

Due to the limitations of today's materials, all safe products are susceptible to heat and fire damage when exposed to high temperatures for extended periods of time. Thus, no safe product manufactured today is considered "fire proof."

Certain materials can provide resistance to high temperatures for limited periods of time. Safes properly constructed with these materials can be classified as "fire resistant." Depending upon the materials used and the methods of construction, safes can provide varying degrees of fire resistance.

What Level of Fire Resistance Do I Need?

In a home fire, the peak temperature and duration of the fire can vary depending upon the size of the home, the materials used to construct the home, the response time of firefighters, etc. It is estimated that the typical peak temperature in a home fire ranges between 800 to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. The typical time for firefighting authorities to bring a home fire into containment is estimated at 30 to 60 minutes.

Paper chars at approximately 402°F. To protect paper documents, the internal temperature of a safe must remain below 350°F while exposed to the conditions of the typical home fire. Thus at a minimum, a safe should provide enough fire resistance to keep the maximum internal temperature of the safe below 350°F, when exposed to external temperatures of 1200° for 30 minutes.

Sterk® data fire safes provide protection from fire keeping the maximum internal temperature of the safe below 125°F, when exposed to external temperatures of 1200°F for 60 minutes. They are ideal for the safe storage of all computer media, magnetic tapes, disks, zips, etc. They also have a thermo-shock  resistant valves system and a demolition resistant construction.

Why Do I Need a Safe?

When you buy a residential security or gun safe what you’re really buying is time. Time to protect your valuables from a thief. What are they looking for? You might think cash and jewelry are the top items stolen during a home burglary, but they are actually fifth on the list. Stereo equipment is fourth, followed by video equipment—grouped as TVs, VCRs and cameras. Guns are the number one items stolen in a home burglary. Can you guess what’s second? Booze and cigarettes! Go figure.

Police reports indicate most thieves want to get their jobs done as quickly as possible to reduce their chances of getting caught. Most break-ins are the smash and grab type—getting their job done in 10 minutes or less—and surprisingly between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the afternoon. Young males, 18 to 26, most often commit these crimes. Their goal is to be gone before police can respond to a home security system or a neighbor’s phone call.

A residential security or gun safe compliments an alarm or surveillance system by protecting the front-end of a break-in. Thieves know they don’t have much time—so they smash, grab and take anything of value to them. Experienced burglars are even bold enough to go about their business with the alarm blaring away. And don’t think your neighbors will come to the rescue. They would rather stay away than put themselves in harms way.

When a thief enters a home or office, the real deterrent seems to be the addition of a residential security or gun safe. Police reports indicate that when a thief sees a shiny, heavy-duty safe they generally leave without taking a thing. They're left to mumble, "Anything of value is probably in that safe and we don't have the time nor the tools, so let's just go to the next house."

Another one of the timesaving benefits of a safe is their ability to preserve and extend the life of collectibles that are sensitive to light and humidity. When the love of a hobby turns into a collector’s business with values reaching into the thousands of dollars, a safe can help protect the value and original look. Stamps, coins, cards, statues, art, photos and many other collectibles located inside the safe are protected from damaging ultraviolet light.
